Image Descriptions

An expressive drawing done in oil pastels on black paper; depicts a naked human torso with their right shoulder closer to the viewer and pink top surgery scars. The person is signing the ASL sign for "surgery" the sign being signed at the site of the person's top surgery scars. Green ferns spill out of the same scar that "surgery" is being signed, spilling out in the motion of the sign "surgery". (Charles Eppley)

There is a person signing the ASL sign for “Surgery” over their top surgery scar. As the thumb passes over the scar, ferns leaves spill out to represent the beginnings of a new life. Ferns often grow where previous plants or life die. I felt a whole new sense of confidence after my top surgery. That my new body actually matched how I saw myself. (Jaimeson Pleasants)
